I know a lecturer at UCL engineering and he says Pietro got a lot of passes by his tutors where everyone else would have been disciplined or even expelled form the PHD program (being late to assignments or not appearing/delivering at all without prior notice, very weak research and paper publishing ...). Fun fact about this guy is that his "discovery" and going viral in social media etc. was entirely a fabricated, conscious campaign on the side of his modelling agency and Pietro himself has being terribly dishonest about it.

There have been a lot of interested lies involving him, and a lot of them comming from Pietro himself. He claimed he had to hide his modelling career and outright stopped doing shots as to not damage his prospective academic career, which is not true as he never stopped doing regular shots, mostly for underwear brands, while being a research assistant.

There is the fact that he lied about already having his Phd in 2015 and being a Doctor, a title he only attained a year latter in early 2016 (4 years full time and another 2 part-time, which is a bizarre long time in the UK where after a Master's it usually only takes 3 years to get a Phd). Apparently none of those newspapers who interviewed him in early 2015 (including the Guardian!) did any fact-check on him.

The official story of his discovery is he went to sign with the agency Models1 UK after going viral and booming on social media, which is not true as he had signed with them months earlier and he also had gone from full time to part time contract at UCL nearly a year earlier (!) and was doing shots regularly. It was that agency who coined the "hottest math teacher in the world" motto and social media accounts related to them spammed around pics of PB in underwear and teaching.
